Lassen peak is the southernmost volcano in the Cascade chain, which include Mt Ranier among others. It last erupted in 1915 an ash cloud similar to Vesuvius.
The peak is not attractive: it lacks the gentle upward concave curve of the flanks of Mt Hood and Mt Shasta and the incredible symmetry of Mt Fuji, which are characteristic of volcanoes along subduction zones. Instead it has ragged slopes, in place almost vertical, and a thick bulbous snout at its apex.
